Is it just me or is reCAPTCHA’s audio test completely impossible to solve? I wonder how many sites are failing to comply with their local accessibility laws as a result.

This was a stunner. Because it must be heard to be believed, I recorded it and uploaded the file to http://lumino.us/tests/recaptcha.mp3. Makes me think of Dada poetry.
It’s not just you. Sounds horrible in addition to being impossible to solve. My poor ears.
Wow. I don’t even know what happened. Just gibberish for 30 seconds.
I’m obviously no longer human as I routinely fail to get these now. And you’re right, the audio version is just plain weird.
I am clearly also an android with memories implanted into my digital cortex because it usually takers me about 10 attempts and a lot of guess-work to get these right. There are dozens of websites and even a few paid subscription sites I have given up trying to access because of these. Where I work we use a simple question. ‘What is the opposite of cold’. This is enough to keep most spam away and is a much better compromise between loss of users and piles of spam.
I very recently experienced the audio reCAPTCHA for the first time (repeatedly couldn’t read the letters correctly) and sat there dumbfounded. I still don’t even know what I’m listening out for. “Type what you hear.” Yeah, right.
